Abstract

ARDILA-BARRAGAN, Marco Antonio et al. Determination of gasification potential of coal from Central province of Boyacá for combustion in tunnel kiln. Prospect. [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.51-59. ISSN 1692-8261.  https://doi.org/10.15665/rp.v16i1.1178.

Ceramic industry uses coal as fuel for cooking generates an environmental impact, energetic efficiency impact and product quality impact. As an alternative solution, coal from the Central Province of Boyaca was analyzed to assess the properties with the highest effect on the gasification process; determining the production potential for syngas and thermal generation. In the study, the thermal simulation of a tunnel kiln by finite elements with Matlab pdetool was performed to analyze the requirements and distribution of ceramic firing energy, and the energetic efficiency of coal was assessed as compared to that of syngas. Results indicate that, according to ASTM D 388, coals analyzed are lower rank, commonly used for the production of syngas in the international context. At an energetical level, it was established that the mass of mineral coal required for the process of cooking, by direct combustion, is higher than that required to produce the same amount of energy from the combustion of syngas. This research constitutes the exploration phase, which determines the viability of the substitution of the fuel type for cooking ceramics in a tunnel kiln.
