Abstract

VESPUCCI, Guido. Waking from sleep: Walter Benjamin and the shock issue. Tabula Rasa [online]. 2010, n.13, pp.253-272. ISSN 1794-2489.

This paper intends to analyze the notion of shock as an entry door to Walter Benjamin's work. By exploring some of his most original writings (such as "The work of art in the age of its technological reproducibility", the "Theses on the philosophy of history", and The Arcades Project, among others) and based on a selection of essays discussing his work, we'll strive to capture the analitical productivity of the concept in order to shed some light on its operating role (philosophical and political), in the treatment Benjamin gives to a variety of topics as art, culture, capitalism, technological reproduction and the modern individual's experience.

Keywords : Benjamin; shock; art; culture; capitalism; experience.
