Abstract Tis paper describes the motives social workers adduce to solve the dilemmas they face in their professional practice. Tis description builds upon A. Schütz' social phenomenology, having as a referent time in the subject's inner conscience, which is considered as a constituent within the action project. In this approach, the because and in-order-to motives appear driving the action social workers implements to solve the dilemma situation at stake. Explaining those motives helps to understand the mechanisms used by social workers to perform in daily life.
