Censuses occupy a complex place within the field of social sciences. While they bring relevant information for different disciplines, it is also widely known their nature of state pro-creation and their biopolitical attempts at controlling populations. However, being in this quandary has not harmed its legitimacy, since they own an epistemic aura forged in a modern/colonial genealogy. This article intends to situate their colonial framework, taking as an example the Spanish nation state, so that we are able to take this key source as an artifact to be decolonized, as a part of a broader project of social science decolonization.
