Abstract

HIDALGO DATTWYLER, Rodrigo; VERGARA CONSTELA, Carlos  and  GONZALEZ RODRIGUEZ, Miguel. Global Policies, Local Responses: Scales, Housing, and Habitat in Arica, Chile. Tabula Rasa [online]. 2021, n.39, pp.83-110.  Epub Mar 30, 2022. ISSN 1794-2489.  https://doi.org/10.25058/20112742.n39.05.

This article analyses the relation between global policies and local responses addressing sustainability, social integration, and housing building. Drawing from documentary, statistical, and observational reviewing techniques, a discussion between scales, lifestyles, and habitat production is proposed. In that spirit, a brief characterization of the history of Arica is done, including the deployment of housing policies and the production of urban space in recent times. In tandem with this, we discuss how deep sustainability and integration discourses have permeated society from the last decades of the 20th century to the present day. Findings show this government mandate is framed within the relation to habitat production and lifestyles in the town of Arica.
