This article aims to reflect upon how hegemonic mass (mis)information media and social media platforms have an influence in legitimizing the current meatist food system, which is anchored in the anthropocentric institutionalized speciesism. We analyse in depth the strategies deployed by hegemonic mass (mis)information media for legitimizing meat consumption, as well as the challenges posed by a series of practices being developed throughout the last years on social media platforms that present a potential delegitimization of the animal rights movement.

Keywords : Meatism; mass media; social media; animal rights movement; legitimization/ delegitimization.
