Abstract

SERGIO, Caggiano. Racism the Argentinean Way: Straining Imaginaries Within a White Society Packed with Black People. Tabula Rasa [online]. 2023, n.47, pp.135-159.  Epub Nov 02, 2023. ISSN 1794-2489.  https://doi.org/10.25058/20112742.n47.06.

Within the framework of neoliberal projects between 1990 and 2020, hegemonic media in Argentina deployed racist practices against Indigenous, Black, and Regional Migrant populations. In tandem, multiculturalism favored the development of alternative mass media, attempting identity-based particular responses and claims. Based upon primary and secondary sources, this article analyzes straining imaginaries from a comprehensive perspective, identifying common traits in the discrimination against those groups. However, racism in Argentina is widespread and elusive. An analysis of recent media will help us give a look on historical racism not only against discreet groups, but against heterogenous working population, embodying grass-roots Blackness. Therefore, this article suggests extend the exploration to common traits between racism targeting specific groups and grassroots Blackness.
