Abstract

ESPARZA VELANDIA, Mariana; ROJAS GALVIS, María Alejandra; ACEROS, Juan C.  and  RAMIREZ GOMEZ, Eduardo. Perceptions of human trafficking in impoverished contexts: An analysis of frameworks. Rev. Crim. [online]. 2024, vol.66, n.3, pp.111-127.  Epub Feb 23, 2025. ISSN 1794-3108.  https://doi.org/10.47741/17943108.665.

Trafficking is a crime that violates the human rights of millions of people in the world. Although this crime can affect any individual, poverty is a factor that increases the possibility of being a victim. Despite this, there are few studies that focus on impoverished contexts, which underscores the importance of researching them. This paper seeks to explore the perception of human trafficking among relevant social actors in a vulnerable neighbourhood in north-eastern Colombia. To achieve this, an exploratory qualitative study was carried out, based on the theoretical perspective of interpretative frameworks. The results obtained reveal that, although the participants have a prior understanding of crime, their perceptions are limited and are largely influenced by media information. Recommendations shared by the participants based on their experiences to strengthen the fight against human trafficking in impoverished contexts are highlighted.
