This research presents the arguments that support the relevance of proposing a fourth substantive function for Higher Education Institutions (IES as its acronym in Spanish): the Innovation. Under the general analytical method, the proposed objective is developed from a mixed method research, which includes components from secondary sources and field work. This study is carried out through surveys applied, by probabilistic sampling, to six hundred ninety-five (695) students of the six IES participating, obtaining a confidence level of 95% and a margin of error of 5%. Also applies interviews, both structured and unstructured, to Directors of IES and authorities of higher education and business sector, selected too by probabilistic sampling. The results of this research suggest a path for Innovation to have a decisive role, as a new substantive function in Colombian higher education.
