Abstract

HEREDIA RAMOS, Miguel Andrés. An approach to the phenomenon of student desertion in the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia: challenges for the construction of a permanence model. Hallazgos [online]. 2024, vol.21, n.41, pp.311-342.  Epub Jan 30, 2024. ISSN 1794-3841.  https://doi.org/10.15332/2422409x.9603.

This article presents an in-depth review of the state of the art and the general configuration of the research process called Model of permanence for the reduction of early dropout in first enrollment students in undergraduate programs, carried out as a thesis in the Doctoral Program of the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the University of Deusto in Spain. Its objective is to design a model of permanence with intervention strategies that contribute to the reduction of early desertion in students of the first enrollment courses of the Interdisciplinary Basic Training field - IBC at the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia - UNAD of Colombia. It is a descriptive-projective type of research because it seeks to explore, describe, predict and propose feasible strategies based on what has been explored Hurtado y Barrera (2017) Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador (2006); with a mixed approach to data collection that allows collecting quantitative and qualitative information reaching "more solid inferences because the data are observed from multiple perspectives" Pole (2009) Creswell (2014). During the research process, a deep analysis and exploration of the background and the theoretical, conceptual and methodological proposals that led to the definition of the problem Balestrini (2006) Arias (2006), of the main characteristics and factors associated with early dropout and to open up the possible structure of the permanence model was carried out, that is why it is important to highlight the details of this review giving depth to the contributions that from different perspectives allow thinking and rethinking on the continuous improvement of the educational quality in distance and virtual higher education scenarios.

Keywords : early dropping out; retention model; educational quality; higher education; drop-out factors; educational policies; virtual and distance education.
