Abstract

BOLIVAR VERGARA, Diana María; CERON-MUNOZ, Mario Fernando; RAMIREZ TORO, Edison Julián  and  AGUDELO GOMEZ, Divier Antonio. Applications and trends of performance tests and their application in Colombia. Rev. Lasallista Investig. [online]. 2010, vol.7, n.1, pp.66-84. ISSN 1794-4449.

Performance tests (PT) are an important component of breeding programs for beef cattle in many countries. Although they have been being applied for a long time, there are some questions about their universality. There is no much uniformity in the methodologies applied by the test stations, with a wide range of dietary and management practices. This review aims to analyze the importance of PT's for the genetic improvement. The methodological aspects to be considered are showed, along with the characteristics, statistical analysis and their application in Colombia. Given the conditions under beef meat is produced in Colombia, the PT's are presented as an alternative to start the process of genetic evaluation.

Keywords : Dual purpose cattle; interaction genotype- environment; genetic improvement; artificial selection.
