Abstract

FLOREZ-ALARCON, Luis  and  CARRANZA, William Andrés. The Motivational Interview as a Tool for Encouraging Lifestyle Changes in People with Chronic Non Transmittable Diseases. Av. Psicol. Latinoam. [online]. 2007, vol.25, n.2, pp.63-82. ISSN 1794-4724.

A community intervention which applied the principles of motivational interviewing (MI) on the induction of changes in the life-style of patients with chronic non-transmittable diseases (CNTD) is presented. To do this, a one-session domiciliary brief procedure of application was developed from the principles of MI, as adapted in function of the motivational stage of change on which the person was located in relation to a habit of behavior that he/she should modify after medical recommendation. In order to classify the motivational stage, the principles were followed and the classificatory algorithm of the model known as Precaution Adoption Process (PAP; Weinstein, 1988) was applied. The procedure consisted on the application of a differential interview, specially designed in function of the stage where the person was located, applying the five principles and general guidelines of the MI (Miller & Rollnick, 1999). The sample consisted of 1500 persons with various CNTD, living in a particular sector in Bogotá. So as to establish the modifications inducted by the interviewing, telephonic following was done a month after the session was completed. Obtained data were evaluated according to a pre-experimental design of systematic case analysis, and allow for a confirmation of the usage of MI to promote serious intentions of change in the life-style of patients with CNTD. Results point to a support of the potentiality of MI to be applied at a low cost on massive interventions with public health objectives.

Keywords : motivational interview; chronic diseases; public health; life style.
