SALES, Hemerson Fillipy Silva; SILVA, Flávia Marcelly de Sousa Mendes da y LIMA, Bruna de Jesus Lopes, Carla Fernanda de. Adapting the Compulsive Internet Use Scale to Assess Smartphone Dependency. Av. Psicol. Latinoam. [online]. 2018, vol.36, n.1, pp.155-166. ISSN 1794-4724. https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/apl/a.4649.
This study was outlined in two steps, which were to adapt (study 1) and validate (study 2) the Compulsive Internet Use Scale to assess smartphone dependency. Two different samples were used for these purposes: one consisting of 235 participants from the cities of Teresina and Picos, and another consisting of 297 participants from the city of Parnaíba, all in the Brazilian state of Piauí. The results of exploratory study 1 indicated that the Smartphone Dependency Scale (EDS) presents a unifactorial structure. This result was confirmed in study 2 by confirmatory factor analysis. The general factor showed adequate levels of internal consistency in both studies, with alpha values 0.91 (Study 1) and 0.94 (Study 2). The findings suggest the psychometric adequacy of EDS, as they have supported the psychometric parameters investigated (validity and reliability) in two different contexts.
