The article shows the way in which pictorial work of art, museums and architectural, devotional and popular pictures manifest himself in the literary essays of Pedro Gómez Valderrama. The main objectives are: 1) to discuss the differences between the literary and the critical roles of the ekphrasis; 2) to present the essayistic texts by the Colombian writer; and 3) to postulate ekphrasis as an important characteristic in the aesthetic valuation of the essay as a literary genre.
