DIAZ ARIAS, David. Confronting Reagan and the Contras: Costa Rica’s public opinion and the debate over peace in Central America, 1986-1987. memorias [online]. 2016, n.30, pp.188-218. ISSN 1794-8886. https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.30.9092.
Abstract This essay explores the constitution in Costa Rica of public opinion about the war of Sandinistas and the Contra in Nicaragua between 1986 and 1987, about Costa Rica’s foreign policies toward the war, and about the imperialist movements of Ronald Reagan in the area. It analyzes op-ed articles by Costa Rican intellectuals on Óscar Arias’ peace plan and the invention of his image during the period. It argues that intellectuals invented Arias a national, regional, and almost world hero by uncritically supporting his peace plan.
