Abstract This article offers a view of the street bands (murgas) participating in Carnival of Buenos Aires city. It presents different moments of the historical process that shapes their aesthetic and actual form. Through carnaval poetry and narrative evocations of carnival memories, characteristics of murgas, such as adscription, identification and differentiation, and notions about gender, are analyzed.
