Abstract

MANTECON, Matilde Souto. War reprisal: the embargo in Veracruz of English goods and the ship Prince Frederick (1718-1729). memorias [online]. 2018, n.34, pp.39-59. ISSN 1794-8886.

Two cases of war reprisal undertaken by Spain against Great Britain during the wars of 1718-20 and 1727-29 are studied in this paper. Both cases involved the seizure of the properties of the English Company of the South Sea in Veracruz, the main port of New Spain. The purpose of this article is to show war reprisals as a usual war strategy at the time, that the Spanish empire used as an articulated system in which metropolis and colonies were correlated in a kind of reciprocal dependency that went beyond of mere political subordination.

Keywords : War reprisal; South Sea Company; English; Veracruz; Prince Frederick Ship; Imperial system.
