From its settlement in 1519 to 1825, the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa and the port of Veracruz were part of the defense system of the Spanish Grand Caribbean which consisted of mutual aid in case of danger before an enemy attack. Because of its geographical location, Veracruz was the least vulnerable military plaza, least attacked by corsairs and enemies of the Crown; from it left the remittances of the place and of soldiers for the support of the other squares. Everything changed with the beginning of the civil war of 1810 in New Spain because now the Spanish government depended on sending troops and resources from Cuba to retain it, as much as possible, until its surrender in 1825.
