Abstract

MC DERMOTT, Anthony Goebel. This Forest is mine. An approach to the dynamics of forest-related conflicts in the liberal Costa Rica: conceptions, representations, and the action of the subjects (1880-1955). memorias [online]. 2018, n.35, pp.107-132. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.35.10690.

The purpose of this work is to offer an initial approach to the internal dynamics of some of the specific types of forest-related conflicts in Costa Rica. This takes place during the 'golden era' of the capitalist modernization driven by the Costa Rican liberal governments, and the resulting consolidation of a liberal environmental regime seeking to 'modernize' the country's socio-environmental relations, under the unquestionable conviction of a capitalist 'progress'. Based on the conceptual framework of the socio-environmental conflicts developed by Manuel González de Molina, from the theoretical perspective of social metabolism, this work focused on the action framework of the subjects who filed their complaints before the judicial courts concerning the forests and their productions and their relation with the diverse conceptions, representations, valuations, attitudes, and interests that these subjects had regarding the forests.

Keywords : Socio-environmental conflicts; conceptions; representations; forests; environmental history; political ecology; Costa Rica.
