Abstract

DUQUE DAZA, JAVIER. The military coups revisited South America decades 1960-1980. memorias [online]. 2019, n.39, pp.61-88. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.39.320.98.

This article proposes an analytical approach to military coups in Latin America during the decades 1960-1980. Based on a review, balance and rethinking of the existing approaches, it suggests a comparative policy analysis scheme using the Most Similar Systems (SMS) strategy. The analysis includes ten countries and the conditions under which military coups occurred in some and were absent in others. It also raises some reflections on bounded or contextualized generalizations in the social sciences.

Keywords : Democracy; military; United States; comparative politics; military coups.
