Abstract

GUERRERO-MOSQUERA, Andrea. The Bolsas Mandingas in Cartagena de Indias during the 17th century. memorias [online]. 2021, n.43, pp.69-93.  Epub Nov 22, 2021. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.43.986.11.

One way to rethink colonial history is by going back to the sources with another look, readings, and questions. In this text, we aim to take a different look at the sources of 17th century Afro-Colombian history, a history that, although it is true, has been widely studied, still has many aspects to tell from the studies of Atlantic History, an analysis that must be done to connect the history of Africa and the New World. This time, we will show an approach from the descriptions that were written about Africa in which allusion is made to the bolsas mandingas. Elements widely studied in other geographies, but which has been ignored since New Granada. Therefore, we will bring two cases in which we can see the presence of the bolsas mandingas in Cartagena.

Keywords : bolsas mandingas; Cartagena de Indias; African cultures and Atlantic History.
