Abstract

HIDALGO, Gina. The masquerade ofjoyful homogenization: the construction of racial discourse in the Black and White Carnival in Pasto in the historiography of the periods of 1760-1833 and 1926-1936. memorias [online]. 2021, n.43, pp.145-170.  Epub Nov 22, 2021. The present text analyses the consequence of the foundational discursive milestones of the Black and White Carnival in the construction of the racial representations in the Nariño culture until the arrival of the 21st century, through the construction of a genealogy of the first two moments of the construction of the racial representations in the carnival of Pasto, based on the historiography presented by the Nariño Academy of history (anh from Spanish acronym). The historical events between 1760-1833 and 1926-1936, promoted by the anh as triggers of the festival, were not unconnected with the construction of racial representations in the culture of Nariño, which, according to our hypothesis, goes through different stages or discursive approaches: self-discovery as blacks, the reaffirmation of dichotomous readings between whites and blacks, the discursive approach in which racial homogenization and horizontality obtained through play are professed, and finally the institutional integration of the multicultural discourse into the party. In this work we propose to construct a genealogy of the first two stages that we temporarily frame between 1810 and 1929, in the city of Pasto (Colombia).
