Abstract

SANCHEZ MEJIA, Hugues R. The Concept of State in Spain and the New Kingdom of Granada: Circulation, Appropriation and Utility, 1750-1800. memorias [online]. 2021, n.44, pp.66-93.  Epub Dec 07, 2021. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.44.946.

In this article we investigate the emergence of the concept of State in Spain and the New Kingdom of Granada in the second half of the 18th century. We seek to account for its emergence as a novelty of government, by presenting an archaeology of the concept, clarifying its scope, use, and other particularities inherent in its application. On the other hand, based on the analysis of the work of the Capuchin missionary Fray Joaquín de Finestrad, who wrote the text entitled El Vasallo Instruido (The Learned Vassal), a critical work of the 1781 revolution of the comuneros and some documents that rest in the General Archive of the Nation, we intend to show the circulation and appropriation of the notion of State in limited spaces of the New Kingdom of Granada. All this to show that the category circulated, thanks to various actors, state or enlightened, on both sides of the Atlantic world, becoming an intellectual novelty that had practical implications in the life of the vassals.
