Abstract

JIMENEZ ROJAS, YANET. The Monument to the Chinese Soldier in Havana: memories, uses and meanings (1926-present). memorias [online]. 2022, n.48, pp.1-.  Epub Nov 09, 2023. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.48.998.861.

This Article is dedicated to the Monument of the Chinese Soldier in Havana, exploring aspects like its planning, execution, official unveiling, use after inauguration and its symbolism. All these elements are put in context to reflect about the history of the Chinese migration to Cuba and to explore the intervention of memory in the continuous articulation of the historical discourses. The paper uses the qualitative analysis of newspapers and documents, as well as secondary sources, combined with the utilization of analytical categories related to memory and monuments. The research supports that over time there have been variations in the uses and meanings associated to the monument. These variations are a concrete expression of the changing place of the Chinese in the imaginary, in the history and in the Cuban national identity.

Keywords : monument; memory; symbolism; uses; Chinese in Cuba.
