Abstract

VAZQUEZ MEDELES, JUAN CARLOS  and  GONZALEZ LEON, ERIKA B.. The National Typography's books: violence and imaginaries of a Guatemalan anti-communist regime (1954-1957). memorias [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.206-232.  Epub Nov 14, 2023. ISSN 1794-8886.  https://doi.org/10.14482/memor.49.305.589.

This work will analyze three printed books published by the National Typography between 19554 and 1956. The selected corpus can be considered as part of a series of writings that exposed the formation of communist groups in Guatemala, and the transgressions and vexations they exercised on political power. The structure of this paper is focused on 3 objectives, the first is to present the front covers of these books to analyze their composition and elements. The second, iconotextual discourse will be exposed, delving into the use of photographic images as support for a policy of criticism and condemnation of communism and its actors. The circulation of these photographs and their use in other printed matter are of great interest for this research, since their analysis explains the articulation of the country's internal and external politics. Finally, the third, editorial production in Guatemala during those years will be approached in a tangential manner.

Keywords : liberationism; visual culture; writing culture; genocide; photography.
