Abstract

VEGA-UMBASIA, Leonardo Alberto; FERNANDEZ-GALLEGO, Álvaro Alfonso  and  GIRALDO-NAVIA, Néstor Raúl. Social environments and their relation to conflict and school violence in the cities of Armenia and Manizales, Colombia. sophia [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.1, pp.34-46. ISSN 1794-8932.

This article aims to describe how social environments (family, neighborhood and school) are associated with the problem of school violence in the public educational institutions of the cities of Manizales and Armenia. With a quantitative approach, with transversal design and descriptive scope, 500 surveys were applied to students in grades sixth to eleven and 30 to teachers and coordinators. The results show that the residential and school social environments have remarkable variations in the two capitals. In Manizales neighborhood environments represent greater exposure to the sale and consumption of psychoactive substances, bars or gangs, and armed personnel; In Armenia, their school environments witness and have more influence the violent or addictive dynamics.

Keywords : Colombia; social conflicts; secondary education; violence; school violence.
