Abstract

GUTIERREZ ZULUAGA,, Heiller; ARISTIZABAL ZAPATA, Jorge Hernán  and  RINCON PENAGOS, Julián Andrés. Visualization Processes in Mathematics Problem Solving at the Primary School Level supported by ICT-Mediated Learning Environments. sophia [online]. 2020, vol.16, n.1, pp.120-132. ISSN 1794-8932.  https://doi.org/10.18634/sophiaj.16v.1i.975.

In the department of Quindío, it is evident from the results of the 3rd and 5th grade Saber Tests that students present various difficulties in mathematics, one of the causes being problem solving. This is due to the fact that many teachers sometimes give little importance to processes such as visualization, which contributes to the development of a deeper and more meaningful understanding of both mathematical ideas and the relationships between mathematical concepts. Alternatively, in other cases, they are unaware of the potential of learning environments and the integration of ICTs that transcend the physical classroom, enriching it with new pedagogical alternatives and giving students meaningful experiences and better learning opportunities. This research was developed under an interpretative qualitative methodology whose objective was to analyze the impact of visualization processes supported by ICT environments on the resolution of mathematics problems by students in primary education. It was found through the use of educational software that visualization plays a very important role in terms of students’ problem-solving styles according to the categorization of the proposed tasks.

Keywords : visualization processes in mathematics; mathematical problem solving; ICT-mediated learning environments; educational software.
