Abstract

COGOLLO, Zuleima; CAMPO-ARIAS, Adalberto  and  HERAZO, Edwin. Rosenberg' Self-Esteem Scale: Internal Consistency and Dimensionality in Middle-School Student in Cartagena, Colombia. Psychol. av. discip. [online]. 2015, vol.9, n.2, pp.61-71. ISSN 1900-2386.

The objective of the research was to explore the internal consistency and dimensionality of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, RSES (Rosenberg, 1989) in middle-school students in Cartagena, Colombia. A total of 951 students, sixth and seventh graders, from several public schools completed the RSES. Dichotomous response pattern was used. Students were aged between 10 and 15 years, mean 12.3 years (SD=1.1); female participants represented 52.6% of the sample. Reliability coefficients, Kuder-Richardson (1934) and McDonald's omega (1970), and coefficient of dimensionality, Mosier (1943) were calculated. Exploratory factor analyses were done to know internal structure of RSES. Kuder-Richardson's coefficient for RSES was 0.63; and Mosier's coefficient, 0.61 (Non unidimensional). The domain/scale 'self-efficacy' presented Kuder-Richardson and McDonald omega coefficients of 0.76; which explained 51.1 % of the variance. And the domain/scale 'worthlessness' showed Kuder-Richardson scored of 0.55 and; McDonald omega, 0.57; which accounted for 38.0% of the variance. As conclusion, RSES is a two-dimensional scale, 'self-efficacy' and 'worthlessness'. The 'self-efficacy' scale shows high internal consistency and acceptable factor solution. Researches should review the theoretical conceptualization and content for the 'worthlessness' scale.
