Abstract

RADA BARONA, Omar; CHAVERRA PALACIOS, Yurlady; MORANTE GRANOBLES, Diego Fernando  and  MOSQUERA MOSQUERA, Omaira. Technology management: A tool for the development of the red chili pepper production chain in Valle del Cauca. Entramado [online]. 2011, vol.7, n.1, pp.12-30. ISSN 1900-3803.

The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the development of the research project titled "Design of a technology management model applied to the red chili pepper production chain in Valle del Cauca". To this end, an analysis was conducted of the history and the concept of technology management, agribusiness, and production chain, and the development of the latter on a statewide and nationwide level. It followed a descriptive analytical approach and used the following instruments: interviews, narratives, and observation of the various actors, namely, the Department of Agriculture in the Valle del Cauca Governor's Office, the Carvajal Foundation, and the Agricultural Traders and Producers' Association {Asociación de Productores y Comercializadores Agrícolas} (Agrovac). The findings reveal that the red chili pepper production chain in Valle del Cauca lacks the use of technology tools for identifying new markets and analyzing the competitors' capacity. The development of phase I called "Identification of the red chili pepper production chain" allows concluding that there is a need to implement technology management in each of the processes that are part of the chain. This must be done by empowering farmers who are members of the Agricultural Traders and Producers' Association (Agrovac) so that they may take advantage of opportunities for growth and development achieve certification under this standard.

Keywords : Agribusiness; technology management; local development; production chain; red chili pepper.
