Resumen

GONZALEZ MINA, Robert Tulio  y  HURTADO MONTANO, Ana Milena. First trials of cultivating and characterizing the essential oil from Conobea scoparioides (Cham. & Schltdl.) Benth. In the colombian Pacific region. Entramado [online]. 2011, vol.7, n.2, pp.174-185. ISSN 1900-3803.

Conobea scoparioides (Cham. & Schltdl.) Benth is a wild plant from the tropical Pacific wetlands regarding which there are no previous research studies of its cultivation or domestication. This paper aims to produce preliminary findings for reproducing this plant under experimental growing conditions that simulate its natural environment, versus those of cultivation in pots. Since this species has previously raised some interest as a non-conventional source of essential oils rich in thymol (which is a valuable compound used for industrial and medical applications), this paper also presents an analysis of the chromatographic composition of volatile compounds for a given local population. It goes on to report a new chemotype for the essential oil from C. scoparioides, which originates in the wetlandsin the Colombian Pacific region. Lastly, it presents the results of the vegetative and seed-based reproduction trials of this species. The reproduction trial results, however, indicate that this species has limited agricultural potential.
