Abstract The controversy over the scientific evidence that there are gender differences in leadership has endured for more than a century. This article offers a review of the most relevant literature about gender differences in leadership styles. Specifically, the objective of this study is to identify the differences or similarities between the sexes in political positions. Do women and men adopt different leadership styles? Are there any significant differences between men and women in leadership styles? Are acculturation and adaptation common factors for female leadership in the spheres dominated by men? It definitely seems that comparative research indicates that there are few differences between the leadership styles of political leaders of both sexes. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to clarify the relationship between leadership and gender.
