Abstract

RUILOBA NUNEZ, Juana María. Political leadership and gender in the XXI 21st Century. Entramado [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.1, pp.142-155. ISSN 1900-3803.

Abstract The controversy over the scientific evidence that there are gender differences in leadership has endured for more than a century. This article offers a review of the most relevant literature about gender differences in leadership styles. Specifically, the objective of this study is to identify the differences or similarities between the sexes in political positions. Do women and men adopt different leadership styles? Are there any significant differences between men and women in leadership styles? Are acculturation and adaptation common factors for female leadership in the spheres dominated by men? It definitely seems that comparative research indicates that there are few differences between the leadership styles of political leaders of both sexes. Nevertheless, further research is necessary to clarify the relationship between leadership and gender.

Keywords : Leadership styles; gender; gender differences; gender stereotypes; politics.
