Abstract

MOSQUERA-MENA, Ramón Antonio. The relationship between technical assistance to small live stock producers and farmers and the phytosanitary conditions of home orchards in the region of Urabá in Antioquia, Colombia. Entramado [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.2, pp.224-230. ISSN 1900-3803.

Agroforest systems are defined as those forms of employment and management of natural resources where the same piece of land is used for agricultural crops, forest, and/or live stock production. Taking into account that this interaction turns these production systems into a family unit, this research was carried out for the purpose of learning about the phytosanitary condition of home-orchard type agroforest systems in eleven municipalities in the region of Urabá in Colombia, South America, using an exploratory approach that obtains information from public agencies that provide technical assistance services to livestock producers and farmers in this region. Our findings show that the system stability is appropriate for controlling pests and diseases that cause significant economic damage. They also show that it is advisable to characterize these kinds of systems in order to evaluate the potential for improving their productive capacity.

Keywords : Home orchard; technical assistance; phytosanitary condition; system.
