Resumen

HOYOS-GARCIA, Ingrith Viviana  y  VELASCO-BENITEZ, Carlos Alberto. Consumption of dietary fiber per day in children with functional constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Entramado [online]. 2019, vol.15, n.1, pp.266-274. ISSN 1900-3803.  https://doi.org/10.18041/1900-3803/entramado.1.5412.

The main pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are functional constipation (FC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It is recommended in children, age plus 5 grams of dietary fiber daily (DFD). The objective of the research is to determine the consumption of DFD and its associations. It is a case-control study. We included 8 children with FC and 15 children with IBS according to the Rome III criteria and 46 healthy children. The consumption of DFD was determined by a 24-hour reminder. Sociodemographic and anthropometric variables were included. The statistical analysis included measures of central tendency; t-student, chi-square, and Fisher’s exact test, uni and multivariate analysis, being p <0.05 significant. The 69 children (10.7-1.6 years of age, 41 male); 56.5% malnourished; they consumed 1.2±0.8 gr of DFD. There were no significant differences in children with FC, IBS, sociodemographic and anthropometric variables, and DFD consumption. Children with FC, IBS and healthy children had suboptimal DFD consumption. The smaller the amount of DFD, the greater the opportunity to present FGIDs (OR=1.31 95%CI=0.32-6.52 p>0.05). In conclusion, the consumption of DFD was suboptimal in children with FC, IBS and healthy with greater opportunity to present FGIDs when less amount of DFD is consumed.
