MARTINEZ-ROA, Ornar-Gerardo; TOVAR-TORRES, Nelly; PRINS, Mirla Villadiego  e  PANTOJA-BOLANOS, Jazmín. Disputes over media representation: Ethnic mobilizations in Colombia, 2019-2021. Entramado [online]. 2025, vol.21, n.1, e11587.  Epub 30-Jan-2025. ISSN 1900-3803.  https://doi.org/10.18041/1900-3803/entramado.1.11587.

The article analyzes the disputes over the validity of media representations, observable by comparing the contents elaborated on the demands and protests, that occurred from 2019 to 2021 in Colombia, in the web portals of El Tiempo, La Silla Vacia, and the ethnic organizations Organización Nacional Indígena de Colombia - ONIC and Conferencia Nacional de Organizaciones Afrocolombianas - CNOA. Through content analysis and data interpretation, we examine the role played by: the organization of information, the thematic agendas, the actors of the events, and the sources of information in the construction of these representations, produced under the presumption of delivering to their readers a version of the events from the perspective of "the truth". The results allow us to observe the relativity of this "truth" and the unequal nature of the dispute between the commercial media and the dissemination organs of the ethnic organizations. It is concluded that the dissemination of information on the historical needs and structural problems of the indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in Colombia, being scarce, biased, and partialized, is placed in a marginal place in public opinion.

Palavras-chave : Media representations; ethnic demands; social mobilization; indigenous peoples; afro-descendant communities.
