Abstract

ESPINOSA ARANGO, Mónica L.. CULTURAL MEMORY AND THE GENOCIDAL CONTINUUM: INDIGENEITY IN COLOMBIA. Antipod. Rev. Antropol. Arqueol. [online]. 2007, n.5, pp.53-73. ISSN 1900-5407.

Based on some contemporary narrations by southwestern indigenous peoples, this article proposes a conceptual reflection on the making of lo indígena in Colombia in relation to the genocidal processes rooted in modernity. It is argued thatthe political and ethical significance of the identities, historical consciousness, and political subjectivities of "lo indígena" emerges from within historical experiences of violence whose institutionalization and effects in today modern/colonial world can be seen in terms of a genocidal continuum. The article also shows that the practices sustaining "lo indígena" are part of embodied cultural memories and forms of moral memory where narratives of suffering, claims to justice, and actions of resistance are closely linked.

Keywords : Colombia; Genocidal Processes; Indigenous Peoples; Violence; Indigeneity (Political and Ethical Meanings); Genocidal Continuum; Cultural Memory.
