Abstract

VANEGAS, Carolina. THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL IMAGE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NATION'S IMAGE IN COLOMBIA: THE ANTIGÜEDADES NEOGRANADINAS ALBUM OF LIBORIO ZERDA. Antipod. Rev. Antropol. Arqueol. [online]. 2011, n.12, pp.113-138. ISSN 1900-5407.

Collectionism and the exhibition of "antiquities" or archaeological objects were fundamental in the construction of a national Colombian image during the second half of the 19th century. The present article proposes the consideration of an iconographical source in order to contribute to the comprehension of the role of the image in the process of identity construction, as well as in the methodology of cataloging and analyzing of these objects. It refers to the Antigüedades neogranadinas album made by Liborio zerda and preserved at the Museo Nacional de Colombia. Based on a description and ubication approach of the author's sources used to produce the album, this article examines the possibilities of the registering of "antigüedades" during the last quarter of the 19th Century, and the centrality of this iconographical representation in the nascent field of archeological studies.

Keywords : 19th Century Archaeology; Colombia; Native Antiquities; Graphical Register.
