Abstract

ENRIQUE, Laura Aylén. REFLECTING ON THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF AN INDIGENOUS MALON (MERCEDES, BUENOS AIRES'S PROVINCE, ARGENTINA). Antipod. Rev. Antropol. Arqueol. [online]. 2012, n.14, pp.139-159. ISSN 1900-5407.

The emergence of the city of Mercedes (Buenos Aires province, Argentina) is closely linked to the history of, not always harmonious, border interethnic relations dating from the colonial period. We analyze some strategies in the use of the past as well as the dynamic character present in the construction of cultural resources of the area after the recent addition to the historical monument "Cruz de Palo" of a plaque commemorating indigenous victims of a fight that occurred in early nineteenth century.

Keywords : Cultural significance; interethnic relations; southern border; construction of the heritage; uses of the past.
