Abstract

LEIVA DEANTONIO, Jaime Humberto  and  MELO BUITRAGO, Paula Janyn. Digital Dermatoglyphics, Somatotype and Oxygen Consumption in Military Pentathlon Athletes from "General José María Córdova"Military School of Cadets. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.10, pp.305-318. ISSN 1900-6586.

With the objective of establishing morphological, functional, and genetic criteria which can be applied to future selection of military pentathlon athletes, 6 male subjects were chosen from Colombia's National Team whom participated in the 56th World Military Pentathlon Championship Munich, Germany in 2009 as well as students from "General Jose Maria Cordova" Military School of Cadets. The study included evaluations of morphological variations, calculations of somatotype values (Carter, 1996), a vertical jump test (with and without arm propulsion) to gauge lower extremity power, and a functional capacity examination based on a modified version of the Bruce Protocol and the use of a Cortex Metalyzer 3B gas analyzer. Cummins and Midlo (1942) Protocol were used during the collection and analysis of fingerprint photos. The average age of test subjects was 23,7±3,2 years, while height values were 173,7±8,8 cm, dominant somatotype was classified as Meso-Ectomorphic, VO2Max reached 63,3±3,8 ml/min/kg, and finger dermatoglypics were characterized in relation to quantifiable indicators with an overall presence of 8,33±1,5 loops, followed by 1,50±1,6 whorls, and a minor presence of arches. With respect to qualitative indicators, the following values were found: D10=11,3 ± 1,86; SCTL=131 ± 48,8, with digital formulas of: 10L=16,7%; AL=16,7%; LW=66,7%

Keywords : Military pentathlon; biometrics and body shape indicators; genetic marker; digital patterns (arches, loops, and whorls); physical fitness.
