GOMEZ TINOCO, Martha Claudia. Comparison of the Stages of Change for Physical Activity and Physical Exercise in Brazilian and Catalan University Students. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.12, pp.173-198. ISSN 1900-6586.
The transtheoretical model has been used in the field of physical activity and physical exercise especially with their stage of change questionnaire instrument. Few investigations take place into the application of the model in cross-cultural studies. The objective of this study is to verify the sorting capacity of the Self-report Instrument to Classify Stages of Change for Physical Activity (SRICSCPA) and Physical Exercise (SRICSCPE), as well as cross-cultural analysis between Brazilian and Catalan University Students. The design was a descriptive correlational model. As participants of the study, 250 Catalan students and 250 Brazilian students were analyzed. We found the following results: participants are mainly inactive, located in the stages of pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation, both for physical activity and physical exercise. By way of conclusion, we could find significant differences by origin, gender, and age, regarding the various categories of stage of change for physical activity, whereas for physical exercise, significant differences were found by origin and gender. The results showed the sorting capacity of the questionnaire on the stage of change for physical activity and the questionnaire on the stage of change for physical exercise, both in Spanish and Portuguese languages.
