This article, as part of an investigation, focused on the characterization of students’ difficulties in learning the concept of the derivative of a real variable function in Engineering (UMNG) programs. The research methodology was the case study, to investigate and better understand the problem and to propose solutions that allow a better learning of the derivative from the concept of limit. The study counted on the students’ opinion and some evaluations. In the analysis, according to the cognitive and procedural categories, difficulties of algebraic, arithmetic and symbolic interpretation of the boundaries were identified when approaching the derivative from the concept of the limit. As a pedagogical mediator, It is proposed the design of an OVA (Virtual Learning Object) for the teaching of derivative.
