Resumen

GONZALEZ MARTINEZ, Miguel Antonio; QUINTERO CORDERO, Sara Patricia  y  RIPOLL DE CASTRO, Alejandra. Security in the Pacific Alliance: a platform for the Colombian State?. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.23, pp.63-80. ISSN 1900-6586.  https://doi.org/10.21830/19006586.102.

The Pacific Alliance emerges as an economic integration initiative. It is expected to yield a combined GDP of more than 2 trillion dollars, which would be among the ten largest in the global economy. This integration offers an important opportunity to achieve a new positioning of its members. With the agreement, Colombia aspires to position itself as a regional leader in matters of security, through proposals for comprehensive actions in the face of new threats, particularly drug trafficking. The objective of this article is to examine Colombia’s possibilities in complying with this positioning. To this end, we will study the premises of structural realism that maintain that the Pacific Alliance is an opportunity for Colombia to overcome its lag in integration and form strategic alliances with other international actors to contribute not only to the security of the members of the Alliance but also to that of the region.

Palabras clave : Colombia; new global threats; Pacific Alliance; regional positioning; regional security.
