Abstract

ROJAS ROJAS, Sonia Esmeralda. Can we speak of equality in the Colombian education sector?. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.23, pp.125-143. ISSN 1900-6586.  https://doi.org/10.21830/19006586.286.

This article has as its central core the Colombian educational sector, which was analyzed from the perspective of equity and the postulates ofAmartya Sen (capabilities theory), John Rawls (Principle of Justice), and John E. Roemer (Equality of Opportunities in the social playing field). The document directs its analysis to determine the constitutional fulfillment of the right to education beyond circumstances, such as the socioeconomic stratum, housing site, place of birth or family environment. It is concluded that, in recent years, education has developed in the midst of grave difficulties, which include high repetition and dropout rates, low educational quality, and high imbalance in coverage rates, all of them, closely related to the socioeconomic strata. These situations have caused stunting in education compared to other Latin American countries.

Keywords : capabilities; coverage; education; equality; equity.
