Abstract

SALAZAR MANRIQUE, Estefanía  and  ZAPATA VILLAMIL, María Isabel. The social impact of the Colombian Army seen from a soldier's perspective. Rev. Cient. Gen. José María Córdova [online]. 2020, vol.18, n.32, pp.906-924.  Epub Oct 01, 2020. ISSN 1900-6586.  https://doi.org/10.21830/19006586.660.

This article assesses the Colombian National Army's social impact in three Colombian territories, based on the soldiers' presence and interaction with the civilian population. To this end, it examines the soldiers' perception predicated on their training and social identity within a military institution, their experiences and relationships with civil society, and the territory in which they are immersed. Methodologically, the information was obtained through focus groups and questionnaires, collected through fieldwork in an Army battalion. The results show that the social impact is not homogeneous. It depends on the territory's dynamics and the meaning the population attributes the institution, as well the particular experiences of interaction.

Keywords : identity; military institution; military sociology; National Army of Colombia; social impact; social interaction.
