This article addresses the relationship between war and cities to analyze armed subversive and criminal groups’ growing interest in operating in urban areas and its challenges to national security. To this end, it addresses the anatomy of cities, their growth, expansion, and the trend toward ever-greater urbanization in the future. It also examines the history of urban warfare, its modern evolution, and its deepening in the present and near future. The Colombian case is then addressed, with the incursions of guerrillas and other criminal groups into the cities. Finally, the concept of vertical geopolitics is developed to understand the new factors that make confronting threats and actions against the State in cities more complex.
