Abstract

SEVERICHE SIERRA, Carlos Alberto; ACEVEDO BARRIOS, Rosa Leonor  and  JAIMES MORALES, José Del Carmen. Landfill mining as an alternative for solid waste management. Rev. P+L [online]. 2014, vol.9, n.1, pp.115-123. ISSN 1909-0455.

Solid waste is one of the main worries in contemporary societies, and it is a global challenge for environmental management. Its disposal in landfills, even though solving an immediate issue, is not a definite solution because it creates a new complication: the occupation of terrains, thus reducing the useful area of territories, plus the gas emission that negatively affects the atmosphere and increases the contamination risks for surface and underground water sources. This study revises the issue, taking landfill mining as a reference with its technological process, its economic impact ad its applicability as a management tool.

Keywords : use; contamination; waste; environmental management.
