Abstract

MORENO-CABAL, Ana María; VANEGAS-BAUTISTA, Deisy Nataly; DE-CASTRO, Ivonne Angulo  and  GAONA, Luis A.. Diagnosis of the Gallinazo (Coragyps atratus) as a Bioindicator in the Southwest of Bogotá City and its Environmental Implications. Rev. P+L [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.2, pp.6-25.  Epub Mar 21, 2022. Introduction:

Waste management conditions by some industries in Bogotá and the dumping of waste by the population adjacent to them, is a problem that directly affects and impacts on the environmental and public health conditions, where the birdlife is attracted by the odors and wastes generated by industries such as slaughterhouse, generating sanitation problems.

Objective:

We want to establish a diagnosis of Coragyps atratus in the southwestern area of Bogotá and establish prevention and control measures with the possible risks that turns the specie to be attracted.

Methodology:

The sampling was carried out through the characterization of birds by direct observation and impact identification.

Results:

An average abundance of 41,5 individuals for the total sampling with a pupulation density of 117 ind/km2 for slaughterhouse No. 1 and 42,8 ind/km2 for slaughterhouse No. 2. Environmental impacts, nine were identified, one with irrelevant positive environmental importance, which was the increase in the population of fauna species, in this case the gallinazo Coragyps atratus and another with moderate negative environmental importance that was the modification in the quality of water, the remaining impacts were irrelevant negative importance.

Conclusions:

C. atratus is attracted by the waste produced by human activities and industries. Likewise, although the industries involved in the study have environmental management programs, the presence of C. atratus is still observed. A more depth analysis of the situation could allow to identify the reason of this fact.

Keywords : Gallinazo; slaughterhouse; environmental impact; sources of pollution; environmental sanitation.
