Abstract
MADEIRA, João Paulo. CAPE VERDE: FROM AND "UNVIABLE STATE" TO THE PRAGMATISM IN FOREIGN POLICY. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2016, vol.11, n.1, pp.85-101. ISSN 1909-3063. https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.1369.
The article seeks to understand, in a synchronous way, the fundamental lines of Cape Verde foreign policy and its reflexes in international relations, from the period of independence to the present day. The central perspective is that independence in 1975 represented to the State of Cape Verde a new era, although the idea of an unviable State had been announced. The strategy to overcome this situation involved an active bet on international relations, particularly in a pragmatic foreign policy that fitted within a framework of agreement and interaction with other States. We seek, through an interdisciplinary and interpretative approach, to analyse social-international phenomena that are configured in Cape Verdean foreign policy, knowing that they are connected both in the field of history and sociology and in the field of political science and international relations. We propose new challenges for Cape Verdean foreign policy, in an international context convulsed with financial crisis, a bet for a greater regional integration on the African continent, taking advantage, in a strategic way, of the continent as a new frontier of development.
