Abstract

ROMAN ROMERO, Raúl  and  MONCADA GUEVARA, María Camila. AMERICAN MORAL UNITY AND NATIONAL FRAGMENTATION; THE DIPLOMACY OF THE UNITED STATES OF COLOMBIA IN THE CARIBBEAN (1863-1885). rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2016, vol.11, n.1, pp.193-218. ISSN 1909-3063.  https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.1374.

This article analyses the political and diplomatic relations of Colombia with the Caribbean countries during the Governments of radical liberalism between 1863 to 1885, demonstrating that both political thought and diplomatic action were influenced by two situations, one side the internal confrontations of the Federal State that prevented the unity of the nation and on the other the doctrine of moral unit established as a basic rule, the internal order and external harmony. However, the doctrine of the moral unity presented serious limitations in the diplomatic practice of Colombia in the Caribbean. The methodological work is based in a research about the historical conditions that allow the comprehension of the foreign policy during the period of time considered and the ideological bases the originated the political organization in that historical moment.

Keywords : Diplomatic Relations; Federalism; Unit Moral; United States of Colombia; Caribbean; Neutrality.
