Resumen
GARAY VERA, Cristián. Ramón Cañas Montalva (1896-1977). Geopolitical Advisor to Radical Administrations in Chile, 1938-1952. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2019, vol.14, n.2, pp.83-106. ISSN 1909-3063. https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.3801.
In the development of Chilean geopolitics, the name of General Ramón Canas Montalva occupies a prominent place for his ideas about the importance of the "South-Austral and Polar" Pacific -as he called it- for the consolidation of Chile as a "small power in the South Pacific." Its geopolitics, which is three-dimensional (land, sea and air), experienced a special boom during the three administrations of the Chilean Radical Party (center-left) between 1939-1952. This article describes his position as an advisor to these governments, as well as the political and professional circumstances that account for his influence on Chilean foreign policy at the time and in the long term.
Palabras clave : Chilean geopolitics; military thought; foreign policy (Chile).
