Abstract
RECABARREN, Javier and TSO-LEE, Yun. Chilean Parliamentary Diplomacy in Deepening Relations between Chile and China, 2000-2016. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.1, pp.159-175. Epub Aug 21, 2020. ISSN 1909-3063. https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.4251.
The article examines, within the framework of parliamentary studies and Sino-Chilean relations, the participation that the Chilean National Congress has had in deepening and expanding relations with China through parliamentary diplomacy between 2000 and 2016. It is affirmed that, as relations between both countries develop positively at the economic and political levels, the National Congress has played a prominent role in deepening them, mainly through four forms of parliamentary diplomacy: the Chilean-Chinese Friendship Group; parliamentary discussions to approve the Free Trade Agreement and its subsequent expansion with Supplementary Agreements on Trade in Services and Investments; interparliamentary exchanges; and the creation of the Political Dialogue Committee. This paper will focus on the last two forms of diplomacy. For this purpose, a broad compilation of documents and secondary bibliography is made and actors from the Sino-Chilean parliamentary diplomacy are interviewed.
